Gog appears only in Ezekiel's extended oracle of judgment in chapters 38-39, introduced as "prince of Rosh, Meshech, and Tubal" from "the land of Magog," leading a vast coalition -- including Persia, Cush, Put, Gomer, and Beth-togarmah -- in a massive invasion of Israel "in the latter years" (38:2-9). God declares that He himself will draw Gog into this attack, "to bring you against My land, that the nations may know Me" (38:16), turning what looks like an unstoppable assault into the occasion for His own vindication. The invasion triggers a catastrophic divine response: a great earthquake, panic among Gog's own troops turning them against each other, plague, torrential rain, hailstones, and fire (38:19-22). Ezekiel 39 describes Gog's defeat in graphic detail -- his weapons fueling Israel's fires for seven years, his armies' bodies requiring seven months to bury, and birds and beasts summoned to a gruesome "sacrificial feast" on the corpses of the fallen (39:9-20). Interpreters differ sharply on how to read this: as a specific future invasion, a symbolic portrait of every hostile power arrayed against God's people (an image Revelation 20:8 later reuses for the final rebellion before judgment), or an oracle addressed to threats nearer Ezekiel's own historical horizon. What the text itself states plainly is God's purpose in it: "I will magnify Myself, sanctify Myself, and make Myself known in the eyes of many nations. Then they will know that I am the LORD" (38:23).
