Argob (M)
First named in 2 Kings 15:25
Argob appears once, in the brief account of Pekah's violent seizure of Israel's throne. King Pekahiah, son of Menahem, had reigned only two years when "Pekah the son of Remaliah, his officer, conspired against him and struck him fatally in Samaria, in the citadel of the king's house, with Argob and Arieh; and with him were fifty men of the Gileadites" (2 Kings 15:25). The Hebrew leaves genuinely unclear whether Argob and Arieh were fellow victims killed alongside Pekahiah, or companions who joined Pekah in carrying out the assassination -- commentators are divided, and Scripture supplies no further detail about either man. What is unambiguous is the pattern this single verse belongs to: the northern kingdom's throne changed hands violently again and again in its final decades, dynasty after dynasty ended by assassination rather than succession (compare Zimri's murder of Elah, 1 Kings 16:9-10, and Shallum's murder of Zechariah just one chapter earlier, 2 Kings 15:10). Argob's single, ambiguous mention is a small piece of that larger, grim record -- part of the historical books' unflinching account of Israel's political chaos in the decades leading up to the Assyrian conquest (2 Kings 17).
